Real Madrid became the uncontested King of European football after winning the Champions League final yet again.
The Los Blancos won the coveted trophy for the 14th time — twice as many as any other team on the continent — after defeating Liverpool 1-0 in a final that began 37 minutes late due to distressing circumstances outside the Stade de France in Paris on Saturday.
Vinicius Junior of Brazil was the match-winner, scoring from close range in the 59th minute. At the same time, goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois earned praise for making spectacular stops on Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah.
The victory also gave Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti his fourth European Cup championship, the most for a manager in the competition’s history, and completed the Champions League-La Liga double for a club with winning titles ingrained in it its culture!
And there was no need for the thrilling comeback that Los Blancos had to deliver in the final stages against Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), defending champion Chelsea, and Premier League champion Manchester City.
Following this historic triumph, Real Madrid fans rushed to social media to mock PSG sensation Kylian Mbappe for choosing to stay with the Ligue 1 champions rather than relocate to the Santigo Bernabeu this summer.
The phenomenal Frenchman was extensively linked with a move to Real Madrid, but he extended his contract for the following three years, costing 650,000 pounds per week.
“Who needs Mbappe,” said most Real Madrid fans on Twitter, with several supporters even posting memes to mock the 23-year-old striker.
While Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez went on to say: “Mbappé? He does not exist tonight. It’s Real Madrid party. It’s a thing of the past. Nothing has happened. Real Madrid had a perfect season”.
Mbappe’s new contract with PSG goes until 2025, and he hasn’t ruled out a move to Real Madrid after that. According to BBC Sport, Mbappe stated, “You never know what the future holds. I’ve stopped thinking about the future and am only concerned with the present, which is a new three-year contract with PSG.”
When asked if his ambition of playing for Real Madrid was over, Mbappe said, “Never over.”
Mbappe has scored 171 goals in 217 outings since joining PSG on loan in 2017. The French superstar has four Ligue 1 titles and three Coupe de France titles to his name, but he has yet to win the Champions League trophy with the Parisian club.
