Despite being signed for one more year by Leicester, French daily newspaper Lequipe claimed Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel had been allowed to join a foreign club on a free transfer this summer. Kasper Schmeichel has completed his transfer to French club Nice, ending his 11-year spell with Leicester, the club announced Wednesday. Schmeichel has officially left Leicester City to join French club Nice on a three-year contract. The 35-year-old helped them win the Premier League in 2015-16 and won the FA Cup for the first time in 2021.
With Kasper Schmeichel having been Fox’s first-choice keeper since arriving in 2011, manager Brendan Rodgers has to find a new No.1 before the 2022-23 Premier League season. French club Nice is searching for a new goalkeeper following the departure of Walter Benitez to Dutch club PSV. Schmeichel saw him depart with his status as one of the greatest players in Leicester City’s history securely secured. On arriving at OGC Nice, Kasper Schmeichel was met by 2000 supporters from Nice, who watched his official unveiling alongside other new signings, Aaron Ramsey and Alexis Beka Beka. The 35-year-old completed his switch to the French League; he would be joined by international teammate Kasper Dolberg, who has scored 24 goals in 85 games with Nice.
After making 479 appearances for the club and winning the Premier League in what is now one of the sports’ most extraordinary tales, he departs Leicester as a two-time Player of the Season and two-time Player’s Player of the Season. He acknowledges that the previous several days have been emotionally upsetting. He departs Leicester with a sorrowful heart and a heart full of gratitude. He calls the Leicester residents “family” and anticipates returning as a supporter in the future. Schmeichel, third on the all-time Football Club appearances list, having played 479 times over the club’s historic 11 seasons, was a key player during an unprecedented period of success seen under the King Powers’ ownership.
From being a constant presence throughout the 2015/16 campaign, Schmeichel created even more history for the Football Club during the club’s first-ever campaign in the UEFA Champions League in 2016-17. Schmeichel was instrumental in Leicester’s success after contributing to their 2014 progress to the top division.
